Please ensure that your Blackberry device is not connected to the computer until prompted.
If you have Blackberry Desktop Manager installed in your desktop computer then skip to Step 2.

Step 1: Installing the Blackberry Desktop Manager

1) If you have Outlook 2000, click here to download the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. If you have Outlook XP or higher or don't know, click here to download the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
2) When prompted, select ‘Save’ and save it in your Desktop.
3) Double-click on the file you saved to start the installer.
4) Choose your language and click ‘OK’.
5) Click ‘Next’ on the InstallShield Wizard.
6) Select country or region then click ‘Next’.
7) Accept terms and conditions then click ‘Next’.
8) Click ‘Next’ on the second window again.
9) Choose setup as type ‘Typical’ and then click ‘Next’.
10) Select your email system

a) If you are using the Blackberry Internet Service select ‘Integrate with a personal email account’    and click ‘Next’.
b) If you are using the Blackberry Enterprise server select ‘Integrate with a work email account’ and click ‘Next’.  (Please contact your IT department / BES support for any further information on your enterprise mail configuration)

11) Uncheck  ‘Start the desktop manager automatically each time the computer starts’ and ‘Check for software updates’.
12) Click on ‘Install’ and wait for the installation to complete.


Step 2: Installing BlackBerry Handheld Code

1) Go to www.rogers.com/techsupport   (Choose province if prompted).
2) Choose (brand = blackberry) and (model = your model)
3) Under downloads select the most current handheld code available (example :) 4.2.2 is greater than 4.2.1 for your BlackBerry model.
4) Click on the corresponding version that is applicable to you and select ‘Save’ and choose to download on your desktop.
5) Once the download is completed, double click on the saved file to run it.
6) Select your language and click ‘OK’.
7) Click ‘Next’ on the welcome screen.
8) Select country or region.
9) Accept terms and conditions click ‘Next’.
10) After installation click finish.
(Note: Desktop manager must be installed prior to the handheld code)


Step 3: Backup the data from your BlackBerry

1) Run the Blackberry Desktop Manager on your desktop computer.
2) Connect the old Blackberry device until ‘DEVICE CONNECTED PIN: ‘shows a pin number in the  bottom left. (If prompted to upgrade the handheld, please click cancel).
3) Click on ‘Backup and Restore’ button.
4) Click on ‘Backup’ button.
5) Choose Desktop on the left and click on ‘Save’ to save the Backup ( Year-Month-Day.ipd) file.


Step 4: Reload the operating system on your BlackBerry

  To perform a clean installation of the BlackBerry Device Software using BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.5 and 4.6, perform the following steps:
1) Connect the BlackBerry Smartphone to the computer and open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
2) Double-click ‘Application Loader’.
3) Click ‘Start’ under Add/Remove Applications.
4) Type your BlackBerry Smartphone password, if prompted, and click ‘OK’.
5) Select the check boxes next to the names of the applications you want to load.
6) Click ‘Settings’ and then select the check boxes beside ‘Delete all application data’ and ‘Erase all currently installed applications’.
7) Click ‘OK’.
8) Click ‘Next’ and then ‘Finish’.
9) When the process has completed, the message ‘The loading operation was successful’ will appear. Click ‘Main Menu’ to return to BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

To perform a clean installation of the BlackBerry Device Software using BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.1 to 4.3, perform the following steps:

1) Connect the BlackBerry Smartphone to the computer and open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
2) Double-click ‘Application Loader’.
3) Click ‘Next’ to start the installation process.
4) Type your BlackBerry Smartphone password, if prompted, and click ‘OK’.
5)  Select the check boxes next to the names of the applications you want to load, and then click ‘Next’.
6)  Click ‘Advanced’ and then select the check boxes beside ‘Erase all application data (or, Delete all application data)’ and ‘Erase all currently installed applications (or, Delete all currently installed applications)’.
7)  Click ‘Next’.
8)  Select the check box next to ‘Do not automatically backup the application data during the loading process’ (if prompted).
9)  Clear the check box next to ‘Backup and restore applications installed wirelessly’ (if prompted).
10) Click ‘Next’ and then ‘Finish’.
11) When the process has completed, the message ‘The loading operation was successful’ will appear. Click ‘Close’ to return to BlackBerry Desktop Manager.


IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE:We strongly advise that you do perform synchronization with the computer instead of restoring the device information from a backup file (.IPD). If a corruption resides on the saved data, the corrupted data will be brought back to the device during the restore process.

Step 5: Restore the information to your BlackBerry

A) To restore specific databases in the backup file to your BlackBerry Smartphone, complete the following steps:

1) Connect your BlackBerry Smartphone to your computer.
2) Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
3) Click ‘Backup and Restore’.
4) Click ‘Advanced’.
5) On the File menu, click ‘Open’.
6) Double-click the backup (Year-Month-Day.ipd) file
7) In the Desktop File Databases section, select the database or databases to restore. Click the right arrow button. Note: If the right arrow button is unavailable, see the section C) below.
8). Click ‘Yes’.

B) To restore all the data from a backup file to your BlackBerry Smartphone, complete the following steps:

1) Connect the BlackBerry Smartphone to your computer.
2) Open the BlackBerry? Desktop Manager.
3) Double-click ‘Backup and Restore’.
4) Click ‘Restore’.
5) Navigate to the backup file you want to restore to your BlackBerry Smartphone.
6) Double-click the backup (Year-Month-Day.ipd) file

C) If your BlackBerry Smartphone is associated with BlackBerry? Enterprise Server software version 4.0 or later, and your BlackBerry Smartphone user account is set for automatic wireless backup, the right arrow button will be unavailable when you attempt to manually restore most databases.

To restore these databases manually, complete the following steps:

1) Delete the ‘Desktop [SYNC]’ service book from your BlackBerry Smartphone by completing the following steps:

a) On the Home screen, click Options > Advanced Options > Service Book.
b) Highlight Desktop [SYNC], display the menu and click ‘Delete’.

2) Connect your BlackBerry Smartphone to the computer.
3) Restore the databases using the steps to restore specific databases in the backup file to your BlackBerry Smartphone.
4) When the database or databases are restored, click Options > Advanced Options > Service Book on your BlackBerry Smartphone.
5) Display the menu and click ‘Undelete’. The Desktop [SYNC] service book is restored.
